November 2017- Gratitude and Transformations
Jewelry Making with VSA
Art Affects facilitator and owner, Catherine Rich was asked to create recovery based curriculum designed around refurbishing an old bed. This bed had seen better days and had even weathered hurricane Irma in the Keys! The piece needed a lot of attention and hard work to peel away the layers of life. Even the staff joined in to form a community of people dedicated to making this transformation!
We used the furniture as a metaphor for the addict. The trials and tribulations that we all face through life's journey as well as addiction itself often leave us bruised and battered, tattered and torn, and in a sense like this old bed. During recovery we must tear away the layers and address the issues beneath. Only by doing so will we be able to rebuild. And hopefully, like this bed, we will come out better off for the journey we have taken.

Below, Art Affects team member, Courtney Himick carefully prepares hand made masks using plaster and plastic mask forms. Holiday Ornaments at Renaissance Learning Center
The Renaissance Learning Center is a nonprofit Palm Beach County charter school, serving children with autism ages 3 - 14. During Art Affects workshops, the students of RLC participate in art projects designed to stimulate mental and emotional activity while fostering creative expression. The workshops are not only therapeutic; they are fun. A growing body of research suggests that art activities have numerous mental, emotional, and even physical benefits.
Individuals on the spectrum are often visual learners. As such, art is a powerful tool for working with them. Art has the capacity to improve self-esteem, advance communication and self-expression and increase socialization with this population. Participating in art activities can have a calming and nurturing effect on the individual but also enriches the community. “I love to see the students embracing new ways of connecting with the world around them," says Catherine Rich, Art Affects' founder.

The piece will be framed and displayed for all to enjoy in the community room at The Gardens Court.
Art Affects at Lunafest 2014
Jupiter, FL, March 2014-
On March 20th 2014 Florida Atlantic University’s Lifelong Learning Society will host Lunafest, a distinctive touring film festival that honors the talents and stories of women everywhere through a series of short films.
Fifteen percent of the proceeds of Lunafest will go to LUNA’s primary cause partner, the Breast Cancer Fund, an organization dedicated to identifying and advocating for the elimination of environmental causes of the disease.
In addition to films by, for and about women, Lunafest will also feature refreshments, a raffle, and information by local organizations supporting women’s interests.
One such organization is Art Affects, LLC a local, and woman owned business. This year the donation of a handmade necklace and earring set by Art Affects founder, Catherine Rich will be included in the Lunafest raffle.
“When I heard about Lunafest and the causes that it supports, I knew that Art Affects should be involved,” said Catherine.
Catherine lost her mother at a young age to a battle with breast cancer. In her adult life, Catherine has felt strongly about advocating for and supporting breast cancer research. “I look forward to the day that this disease will no longer take mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters from their families,” said Catherine.
In honor of her mother, Catherine designed a pink, breast cancer necklace and earring set to be included in the fundraiser. “I am so pleased to be a part of this exciting event and to honor a wonderful, strong, and beautiful mother as well as all women who are touched by this terrible disease.”
December 2013, the partnership between Art Affects, LLC and New Day Adult Care Center was recently featured in an article in the Florida News Weekly.
